Also referred to as the '''v0.16 Beta''', this version was released as a gift in a magazine but only a few people still own it. This was likely given to a game magazine for reviewing the game, although this isn't certain. It was released in March 1997. The level select menu differs significantly to the final version. It can be downloaded for emulators (see below). See below for the full list of differences:

*Controls are slightly different (see below)
*Croc starts with 3 lives, but instead of dying after 0, Croc dies when holding one life, so technically, both the prototype and final release have the same lives.
*The Box Shuffling Mini-Game is slightly different to the final game. Croc can move around the whole time during the shuffling of the boxes, he can attempt to smash one but nothing will happen, and Beany the Bird (or so it seems) is responsible for the shuffling of the boxes. As a result, Croc may stand on or hang from a box while the boxes are shuffled, which easily causes glitches. This is most likely the reason that Croc was made unable to move during the shuffling in the final game.

Other controls are the same as in the final game, except the camera cannot be controlled with the L2 and R2 buttons. The 180 degree flip is slightly different.

Total Islands: 8
The first three levels have the same level titles as the Tech Demo. The levels in brackets are the 'minics' of the levels in the final game. The first title usually represent the type of level it is, which are usually Forest, Ice, Desert, Castle, Cave, Dungeon, Water or Boulder. Many will crash or cannot be played or completed, which are usually indicated in red.

Playable levels/total:

Completable levels:

Total areas:
The first three levels have the same level titles as the [[Croc Tech Demo|Tech Demo]]. Some levels have brackets which are considered beta versions of the levels in the final game. Because this is an early release of the game, many levels will crash, cannot be completed or cause other glitches. On the Map Screen, the top title usually represents the type of level (e.g. Forest) and the bottom title is the title of the level. A lot of the titles have no proper meaning, such as Default New/Blank Map or No Level and No Map. While not all doors, wells etc. work, some lead to the next properly numbered area, such as 10 0 to 10 1. Note that this is not always the case.

The word 'removed' means that the feature or character was not included in the final game.

Note that selecting levels in different ways can cause the levels to not function properly. For example, choosing an area of a level behind a Locked Door and then going back through that door will load that area, but because it is locked, you cannot go through it. You also cannot return to where you were.

File:Croc - Legend of the Gobbos PSX Beta v0.12 Gameplay

Also referred to as the v0.16 Beta, this version was released as a gift in a magazine but only a few people still own it. This was likely given to a game magazine for reviewing the game, although this isn't certain. It was released in March 1997. The level select menu differs significantly to the final version. It can be downloaded for emulators (see below). See below for the full list of differences:

  • The boot screens are similar to the Tech Demo.
  • The Main Menu depicts a blue and white checked rectangle against a silhouette with the message Press Start.
  • The Main Menu has Start Game, Options, Load Game and Password.
  • The music is similar to the Final Game.
  • The level select menus are different to the Tech Demo and the Final. It starts with 0 0 (boots on 10 0), where the first number is the island, the second the level and the last the area or map (usually separated by doors, wells etc.). When replaying the game or if Croc loses all lives, he can resume to the start of the area he last played, however he will start with no BONUS letters, Gobbos or Crystals.
  • The loading screen for levels actually depicts a silhouette of Croc staring into the sunset, playing soft rock music.
  • Instead of Coloured Crystals, there are actually letters B O N U and S which have the same colours to unlock the Bonus (later Crystal) Door at the end.
  • There are red Poppers as well as Firepoppers but the red ones were not included in the final game.
  • The HUD shows the x symbol for the amount Croc has of an item, along with x/6 Gobbos.
  • At the bottom of the screen are debug information and coordinates.
  • Lives are actually red coloured bags.
  • Some wells look more like Tree Stumps. When stomping one with a cork, Croc immediately is transported to the next part.
  • Red coloured crystals give 5 crystals.
  • The Giant Bee appears more than once.
  • The sound affects for collecting Gobbos are different.
  • There is no sound for climbing up off a ledge.
  • Worms in Wells can be killed.
  • Breaking Platforms have different animation similar to in Croc 2
  • Only the Gong outside of the Bonus (later Crystal) Door is shown. It depicts the word 'GOAL' on its face instead of Beany, and Croc is actually able to stand on it.
  • Upon completion of a level, a screen shows the crystals collected and lives, as well as how long it took to complete.
  • Climbable Walls sound slightly different.
  • Smashing boxes animations are slightly different. Holding down X will not change anything.
  • Enemies do not respawn.
  • Some levels are prototypes of levels in the Final Game, with some differences.
  • There are blue springs instead of Jellies with different sounds.
  • There are stilled disguised crystals as Bonus Letters, but this may be the reason why Coloured Crystals were eventually used to unlock the Bonus (later Crystal) Door.
  • Controls are slightly different (see below)
  • Croc starts with 3 lives, but instead of dying after 0, Croc dies when holding one life, so technically, both the prototype and final release have the same lives.
  • The Box Shuffling Mini-Game is slightly different to the final game.
  • The Popping Mini-Game instead has three yellow buttons which look like the buttons from the Crystal Catching Mini-Game.

Controls

To select levels on the Map Screen, use the SELECT, L1, R1 and R2 buttons. SELECT will choose islands 10-70, L1 and R1 will choose previous and next levels, and L2 and R2 will select a part of a level.

While underwater, Croc attacks similar to the 180 degree flip.

Other controls are the same as in the final game, except the camera cannot be controlled with the L2 and R2 buttons. The 180 degree flip is slightly different.

Levels

Total Islands: 8

Playable levels/total:

Completable levels:

Total areas: The first three levels have the same level titles as the Tech Demo.

He appears smaller and does not attack like this in the final game. He can be tail attacked which is impossible in the final.

Outside there are snakes which look like they are made of red and yellow beads, which will slither and their middle will rise upwards. They hurt Croc but don't attack, and can be killed. The second to last area is different however, as the platforms lead to a small series of caves similar to the final of Diet Brrrrr. There is a gong at the end.

At the end is a Gobbo and a Door, which causes the game to crash on a black screen (42 0).
42 3 - Boulder - Chasm Clincher Boulder Another boulder level, but cannot be accessed from 42 2. Going through the exit you came results in Croc falling continuously. The other exit crashes on the loading screen. 44 0 - Cave - Abyss Abuse

Appropriately titled, Croc will fall instanty when starting the level. It can be played by playing 44 1 and going back through the door.

It will seem like the beginning of Licence to Chill, but when turning to the right, there is a bazzare unused dog-like creature throwing rocks down the slope. He is accompanied by two Firepoppers. He can be killed, but the rock it leaves behind floats as though the creature is invisible. What is interesting is that the rock follows Croc.

45 6 - Cave - Magma Mania At the end is a Gong.

46 2 - Cave - Secret Stash Croc continuously falls.
47 0 - Cave - Bonkers Bonus Similar to the final area in Ice Bridge to Eternity, except at the top are two doors, leading to 47 1 and 47 2, and a Gong at the back. At the bottom of the platforms are two corridors, leading to two doors (47 1 and  47 2).
47 1 - Boulder - Bonkers Bonus A boulder level but the camera angle is set as bird's eye view. The camera adjusts itself as you go further up the slope. The door at the end leads to
47 2 - Boulder - Bonkers Bonus Boulder A boulder level it would seem, but Croc continuously falls.
48 0 - Boss 4 Balloon - Default New Map A beta Fosley level. It is set in a cave with Fosley in the middle throwing his Fosley Bombs. There are window patterns on the floor and untextured platforms which will bounce like the finished ones in the final version, except Croc cannot bounce on them. There is also a strange wall of rows of 0s which can be viewed on one side. It has not been confirmed as to whether Croc can defeat Fosley.
49 0 - Cave - Boulder 5 Croc dies when starting the level.
49 1 - Cave - Default New Map Sn unfinished cave with sticking out parts an 0s on the floor. There is lava, but not much can be done in this level.

49 7 - Cave - Default New Map Crashes on loading screen.

50 - 0 - No Level - Default New Map A Forest area with lava, a platform which loops and hovers over lava, Smash Boxes, crystals and a Gobbo on Monkey Bars. At the end are doors leading to 50 1, causing the game to crash on the loading screen.
50 1 - Water - Enter Atlantis 2 Crashes on loading screen.
50 2 - Water - Enter Atlantis 2 An underwater cave with 2 Hammerhead Sharks, crystal contained Oysters (removed), a Gobbo inside a Bubble within a cage with no key, and a spike-textured ceiling which is non-interactive. The cave behind Croc supposedly leads to 50 1, but crashes. In the area, there is a hole leading up but contains nothing.
50 3 - Forest - Atlantis 4 A forest area containing platforms over lava and three vertical fires (removed). At the end of the platforms is a Gobbo. The doors behind Croc supposedly lead to 50 2, but crash on the loading screen. This is probably because there is no exit through 50 2 to 50 3.
51 0 - Desert - Sludge Basin A desert cave area, with three vine like things falling from the ceiling occasionally. There are three more coming up from the ground. There are also three cracked Platforms above poison pools, a red Popper and Locked Door (the key is in 51 1 through the well). The platforms lead to a red Bag of Life. There are three vertical flames (removed). There are more falling vine things before a Desert well leading to 51 1.
51 1 - Water - Sludge Basin An underwater area with a pirahna, wooden doors (which are never seen in the final game), electric fences, Oysters (removed), a fat purple fish (removed), a gold Key (for the Locked Door in 51 0) and a Gobbo in a bubble.

52 3 - Water - Dinner Time Underwater with a Pirahna, electric fences, a Gobbo in a bubble and a Gong at the end.
53 0 - Forest - Atlantis A Forest area with platforms, lava, two crystals in the lava and a Pelican (removed, appeared in the Tech Demo). The other side can't be reached unless you land on one of the crystals in the lava, which causes Croc to lose a life but keep the crystal, which Croc can then jump in the lava once without dying. The Pelican will often swoop down and attack Croc. At the end is an exit to 53 1.
53 1 - Cave - Atlantis A cave with lava, platforms, corridors leading to a Gobbo, and a Mummy before the doors to 53 2. Mummies are only seen in Desert areas in the final game.
