From the Croc Wiki, the Croc encyclopedia

This page is a list of all pre-release and betas of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. There are many YouTube videos on the beta games, which are posted onto this page. Many of the levels have bugs and glitches which prevent the player from completing the levels. All of these apart from Mr. Gimmicks prototype he got from an Argonaut employee can still be downloaded and played today (see further down the page for instructions).

Tech Demo

File:Croc Legend of the Gobbos Tech Demo (08 11 96) PSX

Not to be confused with the later released Demos.

Level Loading scene.

This was released on 8th November 1996 and is the earliest release of the game. The tech demo and the released game have many differences, including other Croc sounds, including jumping, running and climbing. The demo does have a few levels similar to some of the retail ones. To complete a level, you need to get ALL Gobbos, and there are 3 in a level. This is different from the final game, where you can advance without collecting all the Gobbos hidden throughout the level. See the table below for the main differences:

Differences

Element Tech Demo Final game
Booting the game Copyright notice (blue text), different Argonaut logo animation, different "Press Start" screen Animated Fox Interactive logo, Gobbos inflating Argonaut Software Limited, "All Rights Reserved" screen. Interactive and full Main Menu.
Introduction Aftter waiting about a minute, a book-style introduction shows how Croc learns to move, fight, swim etc. Plays automatically, much more detailed and graphical.
Islands and Level Select

Island 1 - Nice and Easy, cannot change levels. Can only go to next level upon completion. Islands are called 1, 2, 3 etc. Levels have different titles (see below).

Level layouts are similar to final game.

Forest Island - And so the Adventure Begins, can change levels upon completion
Saving and Loading None. Can save in Level Select Mode. Can Load on Main Menu
When Croc loses all lives.... Must start the game from the first level. Can choose to replay the level with 2 Lives or quit to the Main Menu.
Sound and Music

None, apart from sound affects during gameplay. Sound affects without music. Whoosh sound is heard when jumping. When stomping, he always says "Woo-ho!"

When approaching a Gobbo, he will say "Hey!". When rescued, he says "Hooray".

When tail-attacking, only a "Whoosh" sound is heard.

Sound and music throughout. 'Bounce'-like sound is heard when jumping. Says "Wahay", "Shazay", "Yazoo!" when stomping.
Loading Takes longer. Different screen, not animated. Shows Croc walking along with a black background.
Common glitches/graphical bugs

Camera glitch in first level "Nice and Easy". When hanging on a moving Platform, he may climb up onto thin air, then fall down.

In Dangerous Sports, Croc can fall in the sides of the tunnels.

Few.
Bonus Areas/secrets None. Bonus Areas, Mini-Games, Crystal Door Challenges etc.
Guardian/Boss Levels None. 2 per island, 9 total.
Controls

Croc jumps like a leap and moves forward slightly.

Monkey Bars - must hold X the whole time to avoid letting go. Also takes longer to climb.

Running on surfaces are slightly slidy, like on ice in the final version. When stopping, will do a slight skid.

Camera - Not very auto-adjustable. No buttons for it.

O - Makes Croc crouch.

Triangle - Flip 180 degrees, like O in final game. L2 and R2 buttons have no function.

Monkey Bars - no need to hold X, faster climb.

No sliding, apart from on ice.

Camera usually adjusts correctly. L2, R2 and Triangle adjusts.

HUD

Always shows Crystal count and three Gobbos. Lives replace Crystals when affected (gained or lost). Gobbos carry white flags when rescued.

Lives show when entering a new area.

Shows items when affected. Can be all seen when pausing the game.
Interactive Elements

Doors - Few in number, replaced by simple cave entrances. Final level ending door at the end, requiring all three Gobbos to be saved.

Buttons - some unlock (and remove) cages without a key.

Boxes - Smash Boxes are larger, grey with no ? on them. Crystals are spread out when opened. Push Boxes are brown and stripy. Pushing them are slower.

No coloured crystals, and therefore no Crystal Door.

When hurt, Croc flashes for approx. 5 seconds. Crystals do not dissapear, making it possible to stay in a deadly pit for as long as he wants.

Wells look more like tree stumps. Does not have corks on.

Contains bricks like the Red/Grey Bricks in final game.

Lives appear as coloured bags.

Platforms usually move faster. Breaking ones animate similar to in Croc 2.

Doors - open when approached.

Buttons - usually for platforms.

Boxes - Smash Boxes are different per level, with ? and can get all crystals in one smash. Push Boxes are brownish with white arrows painted on them.

Coloured Crystals - 5 in each level, used to unlock the Crystal Door.

When hurt by enemy or hazard, will flash for approx. 3 seconds. Crystals dissapear after approx. 5 seconds. 2 touches on pits w/without crystals means losing a life.

Animations in gameplay

Crystals not animated but will float slightly.

Longer animation when climbing up from hanging on a ledge.

Slightly different animation when defeating enemies. Climbs up faster on Climbable Walls. Pressing Triangle while moving to flip 180 degrees will delay for a short time.

All animated.
Ending levels/Beany Gongs No gongs, but has a final door at the end, requiring all three Gobbos to be saved. Will show a Crystal count screen upon completion. Beany Gong at the end, usually two, including one through Crystal Door.
Enemies

No Dantinis. Red creature similar to Firepoppers without fireballs. (See below).

One Guardian on the last level Dangerous Sports: Flibby.

Many: Dantinis, Guardians etc.

Levels

There are only four levels in the game. The last level, Dangerous Sports contains a Flibby prototype Guardian fight. The levels are modeled with the Final version, so Nice and Easy is And so the Adventure Begins etc.

Flibby (Guardian) ("Dangerous Sports") Fought in Fight Night with Flibby.

0.12 Version

File:Croc - Legend of the Gobbos PSX Beta v0.12 Gameplay

This version was released as a gift in a magazine but only a few people still own it. This was likely given to a game magazine for reviewing the game, although this isn't certain. The level select menu differs significantly to the final version. See below for the full list:

  • The boot screens are similar to the Tech Demo.
  • The Main Menu depicts a blue and white checked rectangle against a silhouette with the message Press Start.
  • The Main Menu has Start Game, Options, Load Game and Passworbbd.
  • The music is similar to the Final Game.
  • The level select menus are different to the Tech Demo and the Final. It starts with 10 0, meaning the first level of the 1st Island, named Forest - Nice and Easy. The last number represents the area of the level. When replaying the game or if Croc loses all lives, he can resume to the start of the area he last played, however he will start with no BONUS letter, Gobbos or Crystals.
  • The loading screen for levels actually depicts a silhouette of Croc staring into the sunset.
  • Instead of Coloured Crystals, there are actually letters B O N U and S which have the same colours to unlock the Bonus (later Crystal) Door at the end.
  • There are red Poppers,
  • The HUD shows the x symbol, along with x/6 Gobbos.
  • At the bottom of the screen are debug information and coordinates.
  • Lives are actually coloured bags.
  • Wells look more like Tree Stumps.
  • Red coloured crystals give 5 crystals.
  • The Giant Bee appears twice.
  • The sound affects for collecting Gobbos are different.
  • There is no sound for climbing up off a ledge.
  • Worms in Wells can be killed.
  • Breaking Platforms has different animation.
  • Only the Gong outside of the Bonus (later Crystal) Door is shown. It depicts the word 'GOAL' on its face instead of Beany, and Croc is actually able to stand on it.
  • Upon completion of a level, a screen shows the crystals collected and lives, as well as how long it took to complete.
  • Players cannot change levels within an Island, but can change islands.
  • Climbable Walls sound slightly different.
  • Smashing boxes animations are slightly different. Holding down X will not change anything.
  • Enemies do not respawn.
  • Levels are modeled on levels in the Final Game, with some differences.
  • There are blue springs instead of Jellies.
  • There are stilled disguised crystals as Bonus Letters, but this may be the reason why Coloured Crystals were eventually used to unlock the Bonus (later Crystal) Door.
  • The Box Shuffling Mini-Game is slightly different to the final game. Croc can move around the whole time during the shuffling of the boxes, he can attempt to smash one but nothing will happen, and Beany the Bird (or so it seems) is responsible for the shuffling of the boxes. As a result, Croc may stand on or hang from a box while the boxes are shuffled, which easily causes glitches. This is most likely the reason that Croc was made unable to move during the shuffling in the final game.
  • The Popping Mini-Game instead has three yellow buttons which look like the buttons from the Crystal Catching Mini-Game.

Playing the Hidden Test Levels

File:Croc Legend of the Gobbos Beta Levels

This uses a script file to load secretly hidden testing levels in the final game. It is only available for the PC version. For example, some levels are unable to complete and some have areas never included in the final game. The video shows that if some levels are played, Croc is able to walk on the actual islands shown in the level select menus. The uploader of the video has said that someone called Andre from the defunct website Croc Fan Forums created these levels. The level select will look the same as the final game. To quit a level, press Esc and select Quit. All levels up to Arabian Heights are test levels, although all Desert Island levels have different variations of the ski slide. See the table below for the main structure of the test levels:

Level Contains

And so the Adventure Begins

Tree stump (removed), Running Dantini (which actually doesn't run), lava, Gobbo, twos Trees (removed). It seems to mimic an area used in the introduction to the final game.

Underground Overground

Strange-looking plant thing which does notihing (removed), crystals, Jigsaw Piece which ends the level, open tree stump with no entrance (removed), unreachable crystal, unescapable entrance.

Shoutin' Lava Lava Lava

Underwater and dark (never seen in final game) with uninteracting swimming red fish (removed), with one Swimming Dantini, a Jellyfish and a strange looking cone-shaped creature (removed).

Lair of the Feeble

A dark cave with a two Torches, lava, platforms and fireballs, with two exits which have edges and bottomless pits after them.

The Curvy Caverns

Starts in a corner of a Forest level which mimics one of the Loading screens in the final game. There are four Fireballs bouncing along the ground, along with a Gobbo inside a cage which there is no Key.

The Tumbling Dantini

An underwater area with four deadly vents (removed) and a Shark.

Cave Fear

Contains a square of green land with a strange looking pink monkey (removed) which will hurt Croc when touched, can be killed for good, or will dissapear eventually.

Darkness Descends

Also contains a green square of land, but instead of a Monkey it has a Blue Whale (removed) which Croc can only walk through. For some unknown reason, when you touch a certain part of the Whale, the game loads the third part of Trial on the Nile from the final release, which can be played to the end. After completing, the level select will select the Fight Night with Flibby level.

Fight Night with Flibby

Croc can interact with a physical version of Forest Island. Touching the sea will mean falling to your death.

The Twisty Tunnels

The same as previous, except he starts in a different place.

The Ice of Life

Same as before, except the levels The Curvy Caverns and The Twisty Tunnels can be seen, as well as Beany holding another Croc above where And so the Adventure Begins should be.

Be Wheely Careful

This time Croc can explore Ice Island, with Beany holding Croc above Be Wheely Careful. He starts on top of a mount covered in snow.

Riot Brrrrr

The Desert Island with Beany holding Croc above Goin' Underground.

Chumly's Snow Den

The Castle Island. Beany holds Croc on the level Fosley's Freaky Donut.

Clouds of Ice

This seems to be identical to the Bonus Area of Swipe Swiftly's Wicked Ride. There are 47 Crystals and 5 Hearts at the end. The only difference is there are no Sparkling Stars.

I Snow Him so Well

The Crystal Island. Beany holds Croc above And so the Adventure Returns and Croc starts on top of Crox Interactive.

Say No Snow

The title is ironic, as it is set on a Forest Island themed level. There is a mountain circled with 49 Crystals, along with two Climbable Walls and at the top 2 Lives and a Beany Gong to end the level.

Licence to Chill

A white square containing a Life, a blue and a yellow coloured bag which were used in the Tech Demo as lives. They can be picked up but do not do anything.

Demon Itsy's Ice Palace

A Desert themed cave with platforms and Mud Pits. There are two moving up and down platforms at each end of the cave, but only one is reachable at the right. They take you to a ledge with only a non-interacting Desert Island themed well.

Ice Bridge to Eternity

A remote Desert Island themed area with Mud Pits, Platforms, Crystals, a Life, an Arrow Platform and a Ghost which will take Crystals and the Key to unlock a Cage containing a Gobbo.

Lights, Camel, Action! - Defeato Burrito

Slightly different variations of an ice slide which Croc can slide down on. He will eventually meet the end in which he falls into a bottomless pit.

Unreleased 'Mr. Gimmick' Beta

This version is even rarer than the 0.12 version, and is assumed that the CD was given to Fox employees to test, and compares significantly to the beta 0.12 version. It is currently owned by Wiki member Mr. Gimmick.

There are only a few minor differences - some of the level titles are slightly different, the backgrounds are different in some areas, different enemy and item placement, etc. He is known to collect rare Croc products from ex Argonaut employees, so it is assumed that the copy was only given to other employees to test. It is the known latest version of the game before the final game. It has been mentioned by Mr. Gimmick on other forums that he could upload the iso online, record playthroughs of the game and even make a website about it, but this has not yet happened and was written several years ago. He has only supplied these images but has not logged on to the wiki for a while.

This prototype is still being investigated for further differences and more info will be added to this page as it becomes available.

Download Instructions

1996 Tech Demo and 1997 v0.16 Beta

Download the chosen .rar file here and extract it with a program such as WinZip, unRar or 7z. Open the .bin file with ePSXe or another PS1 emulator. You will have to search online if you do not have one. Note that you must own a PlayStation or PS2 to legally download it.

Testing Level 'Script Hack'

You can only try this one out with the PC version (seethis link to download). You must then download the zip folder here containing the maps.idx file which contains the testing levels. Backup the original maps.idx in case anything goes wrong, and put the new one in its place which should be at C:\\Program Files\Fox\Croc\gdata. Then run the game and it should work. Remember to use Passwords to unlock all levels, as you can only complete about two of them.
